This question has all the weight of an existential crisis in this maturing age of web design. It’s one that I often get asked by clients who are looking for a website for their brand, and there is usually a correct answer, based on a range of factors such as timing, budget, desired brand positioning, et al.
Firstly, for those of you who are new to all of this, let’s establish what each of these two options entail. A template design is one-size-fits-all solution, housed on a platform like WordPress, Shopify, Squarespace, etc, while a custom build is a more involved, customised (duh) approach – again, usually housed on a platform. Now, dear reader, which one is right for you?
How deep are your pockets?
A custom website can cost a lot more than an out-of-the-box solution.
